José Eugênio Soares (January 16, 1938 – August 5, 2022), known as Jô Soares or just Jô, was a very famous Brazilian comedian, TV host, author, musician, actor, and writer. He was known for his quick wit and friendly interviews.

Jô Soares' Early Life
Jô Soares was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When he was young, he thought about becoming a diplomat, like his great-grandfather. However, he soon realized his true passion was acting. He returned to Brazil to study acting and began his career in Rio de Janeiro in 1958.
Jô Soares' Television Career
Jô Soares started his TV journey at TV Rio in 1958. There, he wrote and performed in many funny comedy shows. In 1970, he moved to Rede Globo, one of Brazil's biggest TV networks.
In 1988, Jô Soares joined SBT. He became the host of a popular talk show called Jô Soares Onze e Meia. A talk show is where a host interviews famous people, discusses current events, and often includes comedy sketches. This show was very successful and aired until 1999.
His Most Famous Shows
In 2000, Jô Soares returned to Rede Globo. He brought his talk show format with him, and it was renamed Programa do Jô. This show became incredibly popular and ran for many years, ending in 2016. Jô Soares was known for his long interviews and his unique style.
Beyond TV: Books and Music
Besides his TV work, Jô Soares was also a talented writer. His first novel, O Xangô de Baker Street, came out in 1995. This book was so good that it was translated into many different languages. It was even made into a movie in 2001.
Jô Soares also loved music, especially jazz. He released several jazz CDs. He also produced many plays for the theater, including a new version of William Shakespeare's Richard III.
