J-FLAG facts for kids
J-FLAG, which stands for the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays, is an organization in Jamaica. It was started in 1998. J-FLAG works to protect the human rights of all people in Jamaica and around the world. It is part of a larger group called the Caribbean Forum of Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays (C-FLAG).
Before J-FLAG was founded, other groups outside Jamaica pointed out that some people faced unfair treatment and safety concerns. This was especially clear during the Stop Murder Music campaign. This campaign asked for changes in the lyrics of some dancehall music that encouraged unfairness. Even today, some groups of people in Jamaica still face safety risks.
J-FLAG works to help with these issues. They try to change laws and speak up for people. They also provide education and support services. The group used to hold regular gatherings for support and community. These events were called "lymes" and happened every month until August 2001. They stopped because too many people wanted to attend, and there wasn't enough space. J-FLAG also works to have fair treatment for everyone included in the Jamaican constitution. They also help individuals who are seeking safety in countries like the United Kingdom and Canada.
