How the Company Started
The company began in 1971. It was first called Volunteer Capital Corporation. Three business leaders from Nashville started it. Their names were Jack C. Massey, Earl Beasley Jr., and John Neff Jr.
Opening the First Restaurant
The very first J. Alexander's restaurant opened in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1991. This was a big step for the company.
Growing Across the Country
J. Alexander's planned to open restaurants all over the United States. They usually looked for cities with more than 1.5 million people. This helped them find busy places for their restaurants.
Changes in Ownership
In 2012, a company called Fidelity National Financial bought J. Alexander's. Later, in 2015, J. Alexander's became an independent company again. In 2017, J. Alexander's bought another restaurant chain called Ninety Nine Restaurant and Pub.
Recent Company Updates
By 2019, J. Alexander's had 46 restaurants. These restaurants were located in 16 different states.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, J. Alexander's received some money from a government program. This program was meant to help small businesses. However, J. Alexander's decided to return all the money they received a few days later.
On July 2, 2021, J. Alexander's announced a big change. Another company, SPB Hospitality, wanted to buy them. SPB Hospitality also owns Logan's Roadhouse. The deal was completed on September 30, 2021.
