The Story of J. Alexander's
How the Company Started
The company began in 1971. It was first called Volunteer Capital Corporation. Three business people from Nashville, Jack C. Massey, Earl Beasley Jr., and John Neff Jr., started it. The very first J. Alexander's restaurant opened its doors in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1991.
Changes Over the Years
In 2012, a company called Fidelity National Financial bought J. Alexander's. Later, in 2015, J. Alexander's became its own separate company again.
By 2019, J. Alexander's had grown quite a bit. It had 46 restaurants spread across 16 different states in the United States.
Helping Small Businesses
In April 2020, J. Alexander's received money from a special government program. This program, called the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), was created to help businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. A few days later, J. Alexander's decided to return all the money it had received.
Becoming Part of a Bigger Family
On July 2, 2021, J. Alexander's announced big news. Another company, SPB Hospitality, which also owns Logan's Roadhouse, decided to buy J. Alexander's. This deal was completed on September 30, 2021. Now, J. Alexander's is part of the SPB Hospitality family of restaurants.
