Starting a Brewery
J. C. Jacobsen did not go to university to study science. However, he learned a lot from attending lectures by a famous scientist named Hans Christian Ørsted.
In the 1840s, Jacobsen realized that making beer needed to change. Before, many small breweries made beer. He believed that making beer should use scientific methods to become a big industry.
Carlsberg Brewery Begins
In 1847, Jacobsen opened his own brewery called Carlsberg. He built it in Valby, which is on the edge of Copenhagen. The brewery is still there today. He named it after his son, Carl Jacobsen.
J. C. Jacobsen really wanted to make the best quality beer. Because of this, he started the Carlsberg Laboratory in 1875. This was a place where scientists could study how to make beer even better.
Public Life and Helping Others
J. C. Jacobsen cared a lot about public matters. He supported the National Liberal Party in Denmark. He was a Member of Parliament for some time between 1854 and 1871. He also strongly supported Denmark's defense.
He was part of the Copenhagen City Council from 1843 to 1857. Jacobsen was also known for supporting art and culture. When Frederiksborg Palace was damaged by fire in 1859, he gave money to help rebuild it.
The Carlsberg Foundation
In 1876, Jacobsen created the Carlsberg Foundation. This foundation received a large part of the Carlsberg company. He did this because of some disagreements within his family.
Later, J. C. Jacobsen had a difficult time with his son, Carl. This led Carl to start his own brewery, called Ny Carlsberg (New Carlsberg), in 1882. But they made up in 1886.
J. C. Jacobsen's son, Carl, collected a very large art collection. This collection is now in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, which is a museum in Copenhagen that Carl founded.
Personal Life
J. C. Jacobsen was married to Laura Cathrine Holst (1819–1911). They had one son, Carl Jacobsen (1842–1919).
In 1879, the University of Copenhagen gave him an honorary doctor's degree in science. This means they recognized his important contributions, even though he didn't have a formal university degree. In 1884, he received a high honor called the Commander 1st class of the Order of the Dannebrog. This is a special Danish award.
