Playing Career
McCleskey played college football at the University of Tennessee. He was a player there from 1989 to 1992. After college, he joined the NFL.
He played for two different NFL teams. First, he played for the New Orleans Saints. He was with the Saints from 1993 to 1996. Then, he moved to the Arizona Cardinals. He played for the Cardinals from 1996 to 2000. During his time as a player, he played both as a wide receiver and a defensive back.
Coaching Career
After his playing days, J. J. McCleskey became a coach. Since 2018, he has been coaching at Tulane University. He works specifically with the defensive backs. His job is to teach these players how to stop the opposing team's offense.

J. J. McCleskey has a son named Jalen McCleskey. Jalen also plays college football. In 2014, he decided to play for Oklahoma State University. Later, Jalen transferred and joined his father at Tulane.
