J. M. Condé facts for kids
J. M. Condé was a talented artist from the early 1900s. He was known for his amazing drawings in children's books. He often used ink and watercolors to bring stories to life. Condé is especially famous for illustrating books by Joel Chandler Harris and Albert Bigelow Paine. He also drew comic strips, including one based on the popular "Br'er Rabbit" stories.
Condé's Art Career
J. M. Condé worked during a special time for art in America. This period, in the early 1900s, is often called the "golden age" of illustration. Artists created many beautiful pictures for books and magazines.
Condé's drawings had a lot of energy. His lines were lively, much like the artist A. B. Frost. He also used bright, strong colors, similar to the style of Winsor McKay. Condé was especially good at drawing animals. He made them look very real in his children's books.
Illustrating Famous Stories
Condé illustrated many popular books for kids. He drew pictures for the "Hollow Tree" books by Albert Bigelow Paine. He also worked on some of Joel Chandler Harris's "Uncle Remus" stories. These books often featured talking animals and folk tales.
He also illustrated books by Martha Strudwick Young. And he even drew pictures for Aesop's Fables, which are very old and famous stories. Condé tried to draw animals as if they were real. But he also gave them human qualities. He often drew his animal characters wearing clothes like trousers, coats, or shirts. Sometimes they even wore shoes!
Comic Strips
Besides books, Condé also drew comic strips. From June to October 1906, he drew a Sunday comic strip called Brer Rabbit. This strip was based on the "Uncle Remus" stories by Joel Chandler Harris. There were 16 different episodes, each with its own title, like "Brer Rabbit & the Gold Mine."
Another comic strip by Condé was Aubrey of the Tenements, from 1904. This strip was about a cat named Aubrey. Aubrey had a friend, a parrot who talked a lot and was a bit rude. The cat and parrot moved from a poor area to a fancy home. The parrot's mischief often got them into funny trouble.
