Herbert Lee "J. R." Reed (born February 11, 1982) is a former American professional football player. He played as a safety. A safety is a defensive player who helps stop long passes and tackles ball carriers.
J. R. Reed was picked by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL draft. Before joining the pros, he played football at Hillsborough High School. He then went on to play college football at South Florida. There, he became the school's all-time leader in interceptions.
Reed also played for other NFL teams during his career. These included the St. Louis Rams, Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants, and New York Jets.

Playing in the NFL
Time with the Eagles
J. R. Reed started his professional career with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was drafted by them in 2004. In early 2005, Reed had a serious injury to his knee. This injury meant he could not play for the rest of the 2005 season.
He worked hard to recover and returned to the Eagles. He even played in a preseason game in August 2006. However, the Eagles decided to release him before the regular season began.
Moving to Other Teams
After leaving the Eagles, Reed played for a few other teams. In October 2006, the St. Louis Rams signed him. He played six games for them, often returning kicks. Later that year, he joined the Atlanta Falcons to help their defense.
In 2007, Reed signed with the New York Giants for their training camp. He was released just before the season started.
Back with the Eagles
The very next day, the Eagles re-signed J. R. Reed. He played on their special teams. Special teams are units that play during kickoffs, punts, and field goals. He also filled in as a starter at safety when other players were injured.
Reed stayed with the Eagles for the first part of the 2008 season. He played in five games. In October 2008, he was released again by the Eagles.
