J. Val Klump facts for kids
Jeffrey Val Klump is an American scientist known as a limnologist. A limnologist studies freshwater bodies like lakes and rivers. He was the first person to reach the deepest spot in Lake Superior. This amazing achievement happened on July 30, 1985.
He was aboard a special research ship called the R/V Seward Johnson. He used a small submarine named the Johnson Sea Link-II to go deep underwater. The deepest point in Lake Superior is 1,333 feet down! This spot is the second lowest point in the United States after Iliamna Lake. During the same trip, Klump also became the first person to reach the deepest point in Lake Michigan.
Today, Jeffrey Val Klump is a professor. He is also an associate dean at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences. He continues to share his knowledge about freshwater environments.
