Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jeffrey Val Klump is an American scientist known as a limnologist. A limnologist is someone who studies freshwater lakes and rivers. He is famous for being the first person to reach the deepest parts of two of the Great Lakes: Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

Exploring Deep Lakes

On July 30, 1985, Jeffrey Klump made history. He was aboard a research ship called the R/V Seward Johnson. He used a special submersible called the Johnson Sea Link-II to explore the depths.

He was the first person to reach the very bottom of Lake Superior. This spot is incredibly deep, going down 1,333 feet! That's like being 733 feet below sea level. It's the second lowest point in the United States, after Iliamna Lake in Alaska. During the same trip, he also became the first person to reach the deepest point in Lake Michigan.

His Work Today

Today, Jeffrey Klump continues his important work. He is a professor and an associate dean at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences. He helps teach and guide new scientists who want to learn about our planet's freshwater.
