The J.Y. Dykman Flour and Feed Store is a historic building located on Main Street in Nelsonville, New York, United States. This brick building once sold flour and feed. Today, it has a small deli and apartments on its upper floors. It is known for being the most decorated commercial building in the small village. In 1982, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which is a list of important historical sites in the country.

What Does the Building Look Like?

The J.Y. Dykman Store is a two-and-a-half-story building made of brick. It has a special roof shape called a gable roof. The front of the roof has decorative wooden boards called bargeboards.

Special Features of the Store

The building has a fancy trim piece under the roof called a cornice, which is decorated with small blocks called modillions. The window sills and the tops of the windows (called lintels) are made of stone. These stone pieces have cool cross and scroll designs carved into them. On one side of the building, there's a window that sticks out, called an oriel window.

History of the J.Y. Dykman Store

The store has been around for a long time. It was built in the mid-1800s.

Early Days of the Store

The earliest map of Nelsonville, from 1867, shows the store already there. It had James Y. Dykman's name on it. This means he likely owned it for many years. His name was even painted on the building's wall and stayed there until the late 1900s! Nelsonville was growing at this time because many people worked at the West Point Foundry nearby.

Later Years and Changes

In 1912, another map showed the building was still a general store. Mr. Dykman had even opened another store with his name on it close by. In the 1950s, the back of the building was made bigger to add more apartments. Other than that, the store looks much like it did when it was first built in the mid-1800s.
