Johannes Pietsch (born 29 April 2001), known by his stage name JJ, is an Austrian singer and songwriter. He won the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 for Austria with his song "Wasted Love".

Early Life and Music Beginnings

Johannes Pietsch was born in Vienna, Austria, on April 29, 2001. His father was an IT specialist from Austria, and his mother was a cook from the Philippines. He spent most of his childhood in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

In Dubai, JJ discovered his love for music. His family's karaoke parties introduced him to pop music. His father also showed him opera. Both styles have influenced his unique pop-opera sound today. In 2016, his family moved back to Vienna.

JJ's Musical Journey

In 2020, JJ started his journey in music by joining The Voice UK. He made it to the Knockouts round with help from his coach, will.i.am. The next year, he competed in Starmania, a TV show in Austria. He reached the first final show in that competition.

JJ studies at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna. Before that, he attended the opera school of the Vienna State Opera.

Eurovision Song Contest 2025

On January 30, 2025, it was announced that JJ would represent Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. He performed the song "Wasted Love". The song was co-written by JJ, Teodora Špirić (who represented Austria in 2023), and music producer Thomas Thurner. "Wasted Love" was released on March 6, 2025.

JJ won the Grand Final of Eurovision on May 17, 2025. He received a total of 436 points. He won the jury vote with 258 points and got 178 points from the public vote. JJ made history as the first Eurovision winner with Southeast Asian roots. He was also the first solo Eurovision winner born in the 2000s.

JJ's music mixes elements of opera and pop. He is a sopranist, which means he can sing very high notes, like a soprano singer. He uses his powerful and expressive voice to explore both pop and opera genres.
