JTBC On air | Watch live (only in South Korea) |
JTBC (which stands for Joongang Tongyang Broadcasting Company; Hangul: 제이티비씨) is a popular TV channel in South Korea. It's a nationwide channel that you pay to watch, like many channels on cable TV.
JTBC started broadcasting on December 1, 2011. It shows a bit of everything! You can watch exciting TV series, fun variety shows, and important news. Many people in South Korea think its news is just as good as the news from the three biggest TV networks.
JTBC was one of four new nationwide cable TV channels launched in South Korea in 2011. These new channels were created to offer more choices alongside the older, free-to-air TV networks like KBS, MBC, and SBS.

A Look Back: JTBC's History
The company behind JTBC, JoongAng Ilbo, actually owned a TV station before. Back in 1964, they started the Tongyang Broadcasting Corporation (TBC). They ran TBC for 16 years.
However, in 1980, TBC was forced to join with the government-run KBS. This happened because of a special law made by the military government at the time. When JTBC started in 2011, some people thought it was like TBC coming back to life! JoongAng Ilbo even wanted to use the name Tongyang Broadcasting Corporation again, but another company already had the rights to "TBC" in South Korea.
Key Moments in JTBC's Journey

- December 31, 2010: JTBC was chosen as one of the new "General Cable Television Channel Broadcasters."
- March 11, 2011: The JTBC company was officially created by JoongAng Ilbo.
