Jaak Lipso (born April 18, 1940, died March 3, 2023) was a famous Estonian basketball player. He played for the Soviet Union national team. Jaak Lipso is special because he is the only Estonian basketball player to win two medals at the Olympic Games. He also won two medals at the FIBA World Championship and was a three-time EuroBasket champion.
Lipso played for the Soviet Union national team from 1961 to 1970. After he stopped playing, he became a basketball coach. In 2010, he was honored by being chosen for the Estonian Basketball Hall of Fame. He passed away in 2023 at the age of 82.

Jaak Lipso's Basketball Journey
Jaak Lipso started his basketball career at just 16 years old. He joined the TRÜ basketball team in 1956. This team is now known as Tartu Ülikool/Rock. He played there for four seasons. During this time, his team won two titles in Soviet Estonia (1958, 1959).
Playing for Top Teams
After his time at TRÜ, Lipso played for one season with Rīgas ASK in Soviet Latvia. Then, he moved to a very strong team in Europe called CSKA Moscow. He stayed with CSKA Moscow for eight years.
While playing for CSKA Moscow, Lipso helped his team win many big titles:
- Two Euroleague titles (1963, 1969). The Euroleague is a top basketball competition for clubs in Europe.
- Six USSR League championships (1962–1966, 1969). This was the main basketball league in the Soviet Union.
After CSKA Moscow, Lipso returned to Estonia. He played for Tallinna Kalev for two years. Later, he played for Harju KEK. With these teams, he won two more Soviet Estonian titles (1974, 1979).
