After law school, Wamble started his career helping the public. From 2006 to 2007, he worked as a prosecutor in Johnson County. Then, from 2007 to 2011, he was an assistant attorney general for the state of Kansas. Since 2011, he has been an assistant United States attorney. This means he works for the U.S. government, handling legal cases.
Important Cases He Worked On
As a lawyer, Jabari Wamble has worked on many different cases. Here are a few examples:
- In 2011, he handled a case involving a person who was not a U.S. citizen. This person was accused of returning to the United States illegally after being deported for a serious crime.
- In 2013, Wamble worked on a case against a company called Advantage Framing. This company was accused of employing people who didn't have permission to work in the U.S. The company allegedly paid these workers in cash, avoiding taxes and benefits. The three owners of the company were sent to prison.
- In 2016, Wamble prosecuted a businessman named Richard Ballard. Ballard was accused of tricking 18 people out of about $1.23 million for his businesses. He was sentenced to prison and had to pay back a large amount of money.
- In March 2022, Wamble handled a case where a businessman, Charlie James, failed to pay taxes for his employees. James had to pay back about $215,000 and was put on probation.
Being Considered for a Judge Position
Jabari Wamble was considered for two important judge positions in the federal court system.
Nomination for a Higher Court
On August 9, 2022, President Joe Biden announced he wanted to nominate Wamble to be a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. This court hears appeals from lower courts. His nomination was sent to the Senate, which needed to approve it. However, his nomination was returned to the President on January 3, 2023, meaning it was not approved at that time. Another person, Richard Federico, was later confirmed for this position.
Nomination for a District Court
On February 22, 2023, President Biden announced he wanted to nominate Wamble again. This time, it was to be a district judge for the United States District Court for the District of Kansas. This court handles trials and legal disputes.
However, some senators from Kansas did not fully support his nomination. There were also concerns about how he handled a specific case. In that case, prosecutors had accessed private phone calls between lawyers and their clients. Wamble was involved, and there were questions about his statements regarding one of the recordings.
Because of these concerns, Wamble asked the Biden administration to withdraw his nomination. On May 30, 2023, his nomination was officially withdrawn.
