Jack McMillan (born 14 January 2000) is a talented swimmer from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He has proudly represented both Ireland and Great Britain in major swimming events. Jack is best known for his freestyle swimming. He achieved a huge dream by winning an Olympic gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Jack's Olympic Journey
Jack McMillan has competed in two Olympic Games. He first swam for Ireland at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (held in 2021). There, he was part of the men's 4 × 200 metre freestyle relay team.
Gold Medal at Paris 2024
At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Jack swam for Great Britain. He competed in the heats of the men's 4 × 200 metre freestyle relay. Even though he didn't swim in the final race, he still earned a gold medal. This is because he helped the team qualify for the final. The British team went on to win the gold medal, and all swimmers who participated in the heats also received a medal.
This made Jack only the second swimmer from Northern Ireland ever to win an Olympic gold medal. The first was his friend and former teammate, Daniel Wiffen. Daniel won his gold medal in the 800 metres freestyle just 20 minutes before Jack's team won theirs, in the very same pool!
Early Career and Other Achievements
Before his Olympic success, Jack also competed for Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Youth Games. In 2017, he won a bronze medal in the 200 metre freestyle event at the games held in Nassau. He also competed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Jack trains at the University of Stirling, where he continues to develop his swimming skills.
