Where the Jack River Flows
The Jack River starts in a state forestry area. This is a special place where trees are grown and managed. The river begins northwest of a town called Murrungowa.
River's Journey
From its start, the Jack River generally flows towards the southeast. Along its journey, other smaller streams join it.
- One of these streams is the Rocky River.
- Another is a smaller unnamed stream.
These smaller streams that join a larger river are called tributaries.
Meeting Another River
The Jack River continues its path until it meets the Brodribb River. The place where two rivers meet is called a confluence. This meeting point is inside the Brodribb Flora Reserve. A flora reserve is a protected area where plants are kept safe.
River's Drop
The Jack River flows for about 8-kilometre (5.0 mi) (5 miles). During this journey, it drops quite a bit in height. It starts at about 122 metres (400 ft) (400 feet) above sea level and ends at about 27 metres (89 ft) (89 feet) above sea level. This drop helps the water flow.
Understanding the River's Area
The area of land where all the rain and water eventually flow into the Jack River is called its catchment area. Think of it like a giant bowl where all the water collects and drains into the river.
Who Manages the River?
The East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority is in charge of looking after the Jack River's catchment area. Their job is to make sure the river and its surroundings are healthy. They help manage the water, land, plants, and animals in the area. This helps keep the river clean and safe for everyone.
