Early Life and Family
Jackie Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana, on May 4, 1952. This was also his mother Katherine's birthday. His grandfather, Samuel Jackson, gave him the nickname Jackie.
Jackie grew up in a small house in Gary, Indiana. This city is known for its steel industry. He lived with his many siblings: Michael, Marlon, Tito, Jermaine, Randy, Rebbie, La Toya, and Janet.
His father, Joseph "Joe" Jackson, worked at a steel mill. At night, he played in an R&B band called the Falcons. His mother, Katherine, played the clarinet and piano.
Joe Jackson saw musical talent in his sons. He first formed a singing group called the Jackson Brothers. This group included Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine. Younger brothers Marlon and Michael played different percussion instruments.
By 1964, Michael became the lead singer. The group was then named the Jackson 5. The brothers practiced every day after school. This kept them busy and out of trouble. Jackie says his mother was very important to the group. She used to sing harmonies with them.
Before joining Motown, Jackie wanted to be a professional baseball player. But the group became very successful. They signed with Motown in 1968.
Music Career
The Jackson 5 and The Jacksons
Jackie sang with a high tenor voice in the Jackson 5. He had the highest singing voice among his brothers. He sang short lead parts in many Jackson 5 hit songs. These included "I Want You Back" and "ABC".
In 1976, the group left Motown and joined CBS Records. They changed their name to The Jacksons. Jackie's role in the group grew. He sang lead parts and helped write songs. His voice also became a lower tenor during this time.
One of his most famous songs, "Can You Feel It", was co-written with Michael. It became a big international hit in 1981. As Michael started his solo career, Jackie sang more lead vocals. On their 1984 album Victory, Jackie sang lead on "Wait". He also wrote the song "Torture".
Before the Victory Tour in 1984, Jackie hurt his knee. He recovered and performed in the last shows in Los Angeles. After this tour, Michael and Marlon left the group. Jackie, Tito, and Randy then worked as musicians and producers.
In 1987, Jackie, Randy, Tito, and Jermaine reunited. They recorded "Time Out for the Burglar" for a movie. In 1988, The Jacksons recorded their last album, 2300 Jackson Street. Jackie and Jermaine shared lead vocals on the songs. After this, the brothers focused on their own projects.
In 2001, Jackie and his brothers performed with Michael again. This was for Michael's 30th-anniversary TV special at Madison Square Garden.
