The Jackie Robinson House is a special historic home in Brooklyn, New York City. It's famous because it was where baseball legend Jackie Robinson lived from 1947 to 1949. During this time, Jackie made history. In 1947, he won the Rookie of the Year award. By 1949, he was voted the Most Valuable Player. This house was named a National Historic Landmark in 1976. This means it is a very important place in American history.

The Jackie Robinson House

The Jackie Robinson House is located in the East Flatbush area of Brooklyn. It sits on the corner of Tilden Avenue and East 53rd Street. It is a simple two-story house made of brick. The house is a duplex, which means it has two separate homes side-by-side. Each home has its own entrance. The address 5224 is the left side of the building. It has a group of three windows on the left. Above these windows is a small porch with a wooden railing. A metal awning covers the porch.

A Home for a Hero

This house was built sometime between 1912 and 1916. From 1947 to 1949, it was the home of Jackie Robinson. Jackie was an amazing baseball player. He was also the first African-American to play in the major leagues. This was a huge step forward for civil rights.

Jackie signed a contract in 1945 with Branch Rickey. Rickey owned the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team. Jackie first played for the minor league Montreal Royals in 1946. Then, in 1947, he was called up to the major league team.

When Jackie and his wife, Rachel, moved to Brooklyn, they faced challenges. It was hard for them to find a place to live because of unfair treatment due to their race. A friend helped them find this house to rent. It became their home during Jackie's early, history-making years with the Dodgers.

After 1949, the Robinsons moved to another house. This home was in the Addisleigh Park neighborhood of Queens. They lived there from 1949 to 1955. In that area, old rules had been removed. These rules, called restrictive covenants, had stopped Black families from living there. Because these rules were gone, other famous African-American stars moved in. These included jazz musician Count Basie and Herbert Mills of the Mills Brothers music group.
