Jackie Vaughn III (born November 17, 1917 – died September 13, 2006) was an important American politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served in both parts of the Michigan Legislature for more than 30 years.

Who Was Jackie Vaughn III?
Jackie Vaughn III was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1917. He moved to Detroit in 1944. He went to Oberlin and Hillsdale for his studies. Later, he became a Fulbright Scholar and studied at Oxford University in England.
His Time in Government
Vaughn was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1966. He served six terms there. After that, he was elected to the Michigan Senate.
In 1983, he made history. He became the first African-American to be elected president pro tempore of the Senate. This is a special leadership role in the Senate. He was later named associate president pro tempore.
What Were His Key Achievements?
One of Jackie Vaughn III's most important achievements was helping to create a holiday in Michigan. This holiday honors Martin Luther King Jr.. He also showed great dedication to his church, the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church.
He was known for always working hard for the people of Detroit. He especially cared about young people. He also worked to help those in need.
Later Life and Recognition
Jackie Vaughn III left the Senate in 2002. The Senate praised him for his efforts. They said he had "fought the good fight" for the people he represented. He passed away on September 13, 2006, at the age of 88.
