The Jackson Barnett No. 11 Oil Well was a super important oil well in Oklahoma, USA. It was the most productive well in the Cushing Oil Field, which is a big area where lots of oil was found. This well was drilled in 1916 near Drumright, Oklahoma. It became famous because it was on the land of Jackson Barnett, a Creek man who became incredibly wealthy from the oil.

The Amazing Jackson Barnett Oil Well

The Jackson Barnett No. 11 Oil Well was drilled by the Gypsy Oil Company. They found oil on February 17, 1916. This well was located in a part of the Cushing field called Shamrock Dome.

How Much Oil Did It Produce?

The well was drilled deep into the ground, about 2,800 to 3,000 feet (850 to 910 meters) down. On its very first day, it produced 4,000 barrels of oil! A barrel is a unit of measurement for oil.

The amount of oil quickly grew to 10,000 barrels a day. At its peak, it produced an amazing 18,000 barrels of oil every single day. For most of its life, it averaged 10,000 barrels daily.

This well was the first in the Cushing field to produce 1 million barrels of oil. It set a record for the most oil ever produced from one well in Oklahoma. The well was finally closed down in the mid-1960s. Today, you can still see its concrete foundations and the capped well casing.

The oil well was on land owned by Jackson Barnett. He was a member of the Creek Nation. He owned 160 acres (about 65 hectares) of land in Creek County, Oklahoma. Oil started being produced from his land in 1912.

How Jackson Barnett Became Rich

Jackson Barnett received a royalty, which is a percentage of the money earned from the oil. His royalty was 12.5 percent. Over his lifetime, this earned him between $3 million and $4 million. That was a huge amount of money back then!

At first, he only received a few hundred dollars each year. His money was managed by courts and the Department of the Interior. This was because they believed he needed help managing his finances.

In 1920, Jackson Barnett married Anna Laura Lowe. After their marriage, a court allowed Anna to help manage some of his money. The couple then moved to Los Angeles and bought a large mansion.
