Jacob Alexander Stockdale (born 3 April 1996) is a professional rugby union player from Northern Ireland. He plays as a wing for Ulster in the United Rugby Championship. He also represents the Ireland national team.

Jacob is famous for setting a record in the Six Nations Championship. In the 2018 tournament, he scored seven tries for Ireland. This was the most tries ever scored by one player in a single Six Nations tournament. Because of his amazing performance, he was named the Player of the Championship that year. He also won the Nevin Spence Irish Young Player of the Year award in 2018.

Early Life

Jacob Stockdale was born in Newtownstewart in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. His family later moved to Lurgan. As a child, he looked up to famous rugby players like Tommy Bowe and Jonah Lomu.

He went to Wallace High School in Lisburn. There, he started playing rugby in the back row. Later, he moved to the centre position. In his final year, he played for the school's main team. He was also chosen to play for Ireland at the Schools and under-18 levels. In 2014, he was named Ulster Schools Player of the Year. Jacob is a Christian, and he prays before every game.

Rugby Career

Rising Star

Jacob joined the Ulster rugby academy in 2014. At the same time, he studied criminology at Ulster University. He played his first senior game for Ulster in January 2016. This was during the 2015–16 season. He played six games that season.

He was also selected for the Ireland under-20s. He played in the 2016 under-20 Six Nations and the 2016 under-20 World Championship. In the 2016–17 season, he played 20 games for Ulster and scored nine tries. He was named Ulster's Young Player of the Year.

In 2017, Jacob was chosen for the Ireland squad. He made his first international appearance against the United States in June 2017.

Record-Breaking Success

During the 2017–18 season, Jacob played 19 games for Ulster and scored ten tries. In November 2017, he played his first home game for Ireland. He scored a try against South Africa. Two weeks later, he was named "man of the match" against Argentina. He scored two tries in that game.

Jacob had an incredible 2018 Six Nations Championship. He scored seven tries, setting a new tournament record. Ireland won the Grand Slam that year. For his amazing performance, he was named Player of the Championship. In May 2018, he received the Nevin Spence Young Player of the Year award. He also won BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year in December 2018.

Continued Journey

In the 2018–19 season, Jacob played twelve games for Ulster and scored seven tries. He was nominated for EPCR European Player of the Year in 2019. For Ireland, he played eleven games. This included five in the 2019 Six Nations Championship and four at the 2019 Rugby World Cup. He scored three tries, including one in Ireland's first-ever win against the All Blacks in Ireland.

In the 2019–20 season, he played 13 games for Ulster and scored two tries. He also played five games for Ireland in the 2020 Six Nations Championship. In 2020-21, he played 14 games for Ulster and scored three tries. He played five more games for Ireland.

Jacob faced an ankle injury in the 2021–22 season. This injury kept him out of the game for the rest of that season. He needed surgery in January 2022 to fix it. He made his 100th appearance for Ulster at the end of the 2022–23 season. He was also part of Ireland's squad for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. In July 2024, he was called up for Ireland's tour of South Africa.
