Jacob Alexander Stockdale (born on April 3, 1996) is an Irish professional rugby union player. He plays as a wing for the United Rugby Championship club Ulster. He also plays for the Ireland national team.
From 2018 to 2025, Jacob held a special record. He scored seven tries for Ireland in the 2018 Six Nations Championship. This was the most tries ever scored in a single Six Nations Championship at that time. He was also named Player of the Championship for that tournament. In 2025, Louis Bielle-Biarrey broke his record by scoring eight tries. Jacob also won the Nevin Spence Irish Young Player of the Year award in 2018. Early Life and School
Jacob Stockdale was born in Newtownstewart in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. His family later moved to Lurgan. When he was growing up, he looked up to famous rugby players like Tommy Bowe and Jonah Lomu.
He went to Wallace High School in Lisburn. There, he first played in the back row position in rugby. Later, he moved to play as a centre. In his final year, he played for the school's main team. He was also chosen to play for Ireland at the Schools and under-18 levels. In 2014, he was named Ulster Schools Player of the Year. Jacob is a Christian, and he prays before each game.
Starting His Professional Rugby Journey
Jacob Stockdale joined the Ulster academy in 2014. At the same time, he was studying criminology at Ulster University. He played his first senior game for Ulster in January 2016 against Benetton. During the 2015–16 season, he played six games for Ulster.
He also played for the Ireland under-20s in 2016. He took part in the 2016 Six Nations Under 20s Championship and the 2016 World Rugby Under 20 Championship. In the 2016–17 season, he played 20 games for Ulster and scored nine tries. At the end of that season, he was named Ulster's Young Player of the Year.
International Debut
Jacob was chosen for the Ireland squad for their 2017 Summer Tour. He made his first international appearance against the United States.

In the 2017–18 season, Jacob played 19 games for Ulster and scored ten tries. He played his first home game for Ireland in November 2017 against South Africa, where he scored a try. Two weeks later, he was named "man of the match" after scoring two tries against Argentina. Ireland won that game 28–19.
Six Nations Success
Jacob was named Player of the Championship in the 2018 Six Nations Championship. He set a new record by scoring seven tries in the tournament. In the 2019–20 season, he played 13 games for Ulster and scored two tries. He also played five games for Ireland in the 2020 Six Nations Championship. In the 2020–21 season, he played 14 games for Ulster and scored three tries. For Ireland, he played five games, including matches in the 2020 Autumn Nations Cup and the 2021 Six Nations Championship.
Recent Career and Injuries
In the 2021–22 season, Jacob injured his ankle in Ulster's first game of the United Rugby Championship. This injury kept him out for the rest of the season. He needed surgery in January 2022. He made his 100th appearance for Ulster at the end of the 2022–23 season.
Jacob was called up to Ireland's training squad for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. He made his first international start since 2021 against Italy on August 5, 2023. He was also part of the Ireland squad for their two games in South Africa in July 2024.
