About Jacqueline Jules
Jacqueline Jules was born in Petersburg, Virginia. She studied at the University of Pittsburgh and later at the University of Maryland. Since 1995, she has lived in Northern Virginia. There, she has worked as a school librarian, a teacher, and a writer.
Her First Books
Jacqueline Jules started her writing career in 1995. Her first book was The Grey Striped Shirt. This story is about a granddaughter whose grandparents survived a very difficult time in history. She has written many books that share Jewish culture and stories with young readers.
Some of her well-known books include The Hardest Word and Once Upon a Shabbos. Three of her books have won the Sydney Taylor Honor Award. These are Sarah Laughs, Benjamin and the Silver Goblet, and Never Say a Mean Word Again: A Tale from Medieval Spain. Never Say a Mean Word Again was also a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award in 2014.
Stories from School Life
Many of Jules's stories are inspired by her time as an elementary school librarian. For example, No English is about two second-grade girls. They find a clever way to talk to each other even though they speak different languages.
Duck for Turkey Day tells the story of a Vietnamese-American child. She worries about her family's special Thanksgiving dinner. Unite or Die: How Thirteen States Became a Nation started as a play. Jacqueline Jules wrote it for her students to perform on Constitution Day.
The Zapato Power Series
Jacqueline Jules also created the Zapato Power series. These are chapter books about a boy named Freddie Ramos. He has super-powered purple sneakers that let him run faster than trains!
The idea for this series came from young students. They kept asking for a book about a "superhero" that was easy for early elementary kids to read.
Jacqueline Jules's Poetry
Besides books, Jacqueline Jules also writes poetry. Her poems have been published in many places. These include Christian Science Monitor, St. Anthony Messenger, Cicada, Cricket, and BALLOONS Lit. Journal.
She has won several awards for her poetry. She won the Arlington Arts Moving Words Contest in 1999 and 2007. In 2009, she received the SCBWI Magazine Merit Plaque for Poetry. She also won the Best Original Poetry award from the Catholic Press Association in 2008.
