Jacques Guillaume Lucien Amans (1801–1888) was a French artist. He was a neoclassical portrait painter. He worked in New Orleans, USA, during the 1840s and 1850s.
Amans was born in Maastricht, which was a French city at that time. His father was a French officer under Napoléon. Jacques Amans learned to paint in the French neoclassical style. He showed his paintings at the Paris Salon from 1831 to 1837. This was a very important art show in Paris.
Amans likely heard about another artist, Jean Joseph Vaudechamp, who was doing well in Louisiana. This probably made Amans want to visit. The two artists traveled on the same ship to New Orleans around 1837. After Vaudechamp left Louisiana in 1839, Amans became the most famous portrait painter there.
In the mid-1840s, Amans married Azoline Landreaux. She was the daughter of a sugar planter from St. Charles Parish, Louisiana. Amans bought a large farm called Trinity Plantation. In 1856, a Louisiana planter named Robert Ruffin Barrow Sr. asked Amans to stay longer. He wanted Amans to paint a large portrait of his wife, Volumnia Washington Hunley Barrow. This painting now hangs in Residence Plantation House.
In 1856, Amans and Azoline went back to France. He died there in 1888 at the age of 87. He never returned to Louisiana.
Amans' Painting Style
Jacques Amans painted many portraits. One of his subjects was Clara Mazureau when she was a young girl. Amans often painted people from the chest up, showing their faces and hands clearly.
Amans was influenced by famous French neoclassical artists. These included Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and Jacques-Louis David. Amans focused on careful draftsmanship and realism. This means he paid close attention to making the faces and hands look very real.
Famous People Painted by Amans
One of the most famous people Amans painted was President Andrew Jackson. Jackson sat for his portrait in 1840. This was 25 years after the Battle of New Orleans. The painting shows an older, but strong, former president. It has many details about his face and the things around him.
