Jacques Daret facts for kids

Jacques Daret was an important painter from the Netherlands who lived a long time ago, from about 1404 to 1470. He was born in a city called Tournai, which is now part of Belgium. He spent most of his life there.
When he was young, Daret spent 15 years learning to paint in the studio of a famous artist named Robert Campin. Another well-known painter, Rogier van der Weyden, also studied there. After his training, Daret became a master painter himself.
He became a favorite artist of the powerful Burgundian court. For 20 years, his main supporter was Jean de Clercq, who was the abbot of St. Vaast in Arras.
His Famous Paintings
Even though Jacques Daret painted many works, only four of his paintings are still around today. These four paintings are all part of a larger artwork called the Arras Altarpiece or Saint-Vaast Altarpiece. An altarpiece is a work of art placed behind the altar in a church.
Daret painted this altarpiece for his supporter, Jean de Clercq, between the years 1433 and 1435. These paintings show a style called realism, which was common in Flemish art at the time. This style made things look very real and detailed.
Connecting the Artists
Art experts often talk about Jacques Daret because he helps us understand other famous painters from his time. We have good records about Daret, and we know for sure that he painted the Arras Altarpiece. We also know he was a student of Robert Campin.
Because Daret's paintings look very similar to those by an artist known as the "Master of Flémalle," many experts believe that the Master of Flémalle was actually Robert Campin. This connection is very important! It helps us link Robert Campin (or the Master of Flémalle) to his other famous student, Rogier van der Weyden.
The Arras Altarpiece Panels
The four paintings that survived from Daret's Arras Altarpiece are:
- The Visitation
- The Adoration of the Magi
- The Nativity
- The Presentation in the Temple
The Visitation and Adoration of the Magi are now in a museum in Berlin, Germany. The Nativity is in a museum in Madrid, Spain. The Presentation in the Temple is in a museum in Paris, France.
