Raja Jagannath Prasad Singh Kinkar (who passed away in 1938) was an important ruler from Deo Raj. This was a princely state in what is now the Aurangabad area of Bihar, India. He is famous for making Chhat Mela in 1930. This was Bihar's very first film! It was a silent documentary about the Chhath festival in Deo.
A Pioneer Filmmaker
Bihar's First Film
Raja Jagannath Prasad Singh made his first film, Chhat Mela, in 1930. Many people consider this to be the very first film ever made in Bihar. It took 32 days to create this movie. Raja Jagannath himself was the producer, director, and writer for Chhat Mela.
After the film was finished, it was first shown on the grounds of Raja Jagannath's palace. Many people came to watch it. They traveled from places like Gaya, Jehanabad, Aurangabad, Nawada, Sasaram, and Patna.
Making Feature Films
After the success of Chhat Mela, Raja Jagannath decided to make a longer movie. In 1932, he produced a feature film called Vilvamangal. This movie was about the love story of a famous poet named Surdas. Raja Jagannath Prasad Singh wrote the story and dialogue for this film.
The film was shot in different locations in Deo and Gaya. Raja Jagannath even acted in the movie himself, playing the role of Vilvamangal's father. Vilvamangal was first shown to the public in January 1933. The first official screening happened in Ranchi. A very important person, Sir Maurice Garnier Hallett, who was the Chief Secretary for the Government of Bihar and Orissa, opened the event.
Raja Jagannath also produced another feature film called Punarjanma in the 1930s. He also published a collection of songs in the Magahi language in 1934.

His Legacy
Raja Jagannath Prasad Singh Kinkar is remembered for his important work in filmmaking. An award called the Filmmaker Raja Jagannath Singh Kinkar Award was named after him. Also, a government school in Deo, Aurangabad, is named after him. It is called Raja Jagannath High School and was started in 1938.
