The Jaguar Conservation Fund (JCF) is an organization that works to protect jaguars. It is also known by its Portuguese name, Instituto Onça-Pintada (IOP). A group of scientists who had studied jaguars for a long time started JCF in June 2002.

The main goal of JCF is to "promote the conservation of the jaguar, its natural prey and habitat". This means they want to protect jaguars, the animals they eat, and the places where they live. They also work to help jaguars and people live together peacefully. They do this through scientific research and special conservation plans.

Jaguars live in many places, from northern Argentina to the southwestern United States. Almost half (48%) of all jaguars live in Brazil. Even though jaguars are considered endangered in Brazil, there were not many programs to protect them before JCF started. Today, JCF is the only Brazilian NGO (non-governmental organization) that focuses only on jaguar conservation.

What JCF Does

The Jaguar Conservation Fund does a lot of important work to help jaguars. They carry out scientific research and run projects that help both jaguars and people.

Scientific Research

JCF scientists are currently doing research in four major natural areas in Brazil. These areas are the Amazon, Cerrado, Caatinga, and Pantanal. They also help other groups working in the Atlantic Forest.

Their research includes:

  • Monitoring Jaguars: They watch jaguar populations over many years. This helps them understand how many jaguars there are and if their numbers are growing or shrinking.
  • Studying Prey Animals: They also keep track of the main animals that jaguars eat. This is important because jaguars need enough food to survive.
  • Solving Conflicts: Sometimes, jaguars hunt farm animals like cows. This can cause problems with ranchers. JCF works on programs to help solve these conflicts. They try to find ways for jaguars and ranchers to live side-by-side.

Community and Education Projects

Besides scientific work, JCF also has projects that help communities. These projects focus on culture, education, and social issues. They teach people about jaguars and why it's important to protect them. These efforts help protect jaguars, all kinds of biodiversity (the variety of life on Earth), and even help reduce the effects of global warming.

Jaguar Conservation Fund – US

In 2004, the Jaguar Conservation Fund – US was created. This organization helps people outside of Brazil support JCF's work. It is a non-profit organization, which means it uses all its money to help jaguars, not to make a profit.
