About Jahkoy
His Early Life
Jahkoy Palmer was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His mother is from Jamaica, and his father is from Ethiopia. Growing up, he lived in different neighborhoods in Toronto. To help him stay focused, his parents sent him to Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic school.
Jahkoy started writing poetry when he was just 11 years old. He soon began turning these poems into rap songs. By the age of 14, he was already recording and rapping under the name Raheem. He looked up to artists like Pharrell and Andre 3000 as he was starting his music journey.
Music Career Highlights
When he was younger, Jahkoy performed at many events in Toronto as Raheem. These included the Manifesto Arts Festival and the 106 and York Urban Arts Festival. When he turned 19, he decided to use his birth name, Jahkoy, for his music.
In December 2013, he released his first mixtape as JAHKOY, called Forward Thinking. This album showed off his unique "bipolar" sound, which meant he mixed different styles. It also marked a change where he started singing more than rapping.
Jahkoy has worked with other artists like Willow and Jaden Smith. In 2015, he released songs such as "Still in Love" and "Hold Your Hand." These songs were often played on popular radio stations by Zane Lowe, Drake, Elton John, and Pharrell.
In early 2016, Jahkoy signed with Def Jam Recordings, a big music label. He released his first song with Def Jam, "Odd Future," in January 2016. This song was first played on Zane Lowe's radio show and later by Drake.
In 2017, Jahkoy went on tour with Ella Mai, opening for the singer Kehlani on her SweetSexySavage World Tour.
