Jahn Teigen (born 27 September 1949 – died 24 February 2020) was a famous Norwegian singer, musician, and comedian. He was well-known for representing Norway three times in the Eurovision Song Contest (in 1978, 1982, and 1983). His birth name was Jan, but he later added a silent "H". From 2006 until his death, he lived in Sweden.
Jahn Teigen's Music Journey
Early Days with Popol Vuh
Jahn Teigen was born in Tønsberg, Norway. He began his music career in the late 1960s. His big break came in the early 1970s as the lead singer of the rock band Popol Vuh.
They released three successful albums. Their most popular album, Stolen From Time, came out in 1976. By then, the band had changed its name to Popol Ace. This was to avoid confusion with a German band with the same name. "Popol Vuh" is a Maya Indian word meaning "book of the community."
Jahn also performed at the Roskilde Festival in 1972. This is one of Europe's biggest music festivals.
Fun with Prima Vera
Jahn Teigen was also part of a Norwegian comedy trio called Prima Vera. He joined Herodes Falsk and Tom Mathisen. They released seven albums between 1977 and 1984.
Their songs often took popular hits and gave them funny, silly lyrics. This was very popular in Norway. Their album Brakara (1978) was a huge success. It sold over 100,000 copies and reached number one on the music charts.
One famous example is Jahn's funny, mock-Russian version of his own hit song, Mil Etter Mil. He was one of the few artists to have success with both a serious and a funny version of the same song at the same time. Prima Vera had many other hits, like Så lykkelig i Sverige and Det er Norge som er bra.
Jahn left Prima Vera in 1984. He didn't speak to his bandmates for 15 years. They became friends again in 1999.
Eurovision Song Contest Appearances
Jahn Teigen is very famous for his appearances in the Eurovision Song Contest.
In 1978, he sang Mil etter mil in Paris. This song became famous for not getting any points from other countries. It was the first time this happened with the new Eurovision voting system. Even so, the song was a huge hit in Norway! It stayed on the national charts for months. It was his most successful song ever. His next single was called Jeg gi'kke opp (meaning "I don't give up"). His first album that year was humorously titled This Year's Loser.
Jahn returned to Eurovision in 1982 in Harrogate, United Kingdom. He sang Adieu as a duet with Anita Skorgan. They finished in 12th place. Jahn and Anita were married from 1984 to 1988 and had a daughter together.
In 1983, in Munich, Germany, Jahn sang solo again. The song was Do re mi, which he wrote with Anita Skorgan. This song gave him his best result, finishing in 9th place.
Jahn Teigen took part in the Norwegian national Eurovision final, called the Melodi Grand Prix, a record fourteen times. He won the Melodi Grand Prix four times and was runner-up four times. He also hosted the show and performed during the breaks.
