Jair da Costa, often called just Jair, was a famous Brazilian football player. He was born on July 9, 1940, and passed away on April 26, 2025. Jair played as a right winger, which means he played on the right side of the field, helping both attack and defense.
He played for clubs in Brazil, Italy, and Canada. In Italy, his teams won important tournaments like the European Cup and the Intercontinental Cup multiple times. Jair also played briefly for the Brazilian national team. He was part of the Brazilian team that won the 1962 FIFA World Cup, even though he did not play in any of the matches.

Jair da Costa's Club Career
Starting in Brazil
Jair da Costa began his football journey with a Brazilian club called Portuguesa. He started in their youth teams and then made his first professional appearance against XV Novembro de Jaú. While playing for Portuguesa, he helped his team finish second in the 1960 Campeonato Paulista tournament.
Success with Inter Milan
In November 1962, Jair da Costa moved to Italy to play for Inter Milan. He played a total of 260 games for this famous club over two different periods. His first time with Inter was from 1962 to 1967, and his second was from 1968 to 1972.
Jair was a very important player for Inter Milan during a special time known as Grande Inter. This was when the team was managed by Helenio Herrera. During his time at Inter, Jair helped them win four Serie A titles, which is the top Italian football league. Two of these titles were won in a row.
He also helped Inter win the European Cup twice, in 1964 and 1965. On top of that, they won the Intercontinental Cup in 1964 and 1965. Jair was the first Brazilian player to win both the European Cup and the Intercontinental Cup multiple times with a European team.

Between his two periods at Inter Milan, Jair da Costa played for Roma during the 1967–68 season. After his time in Italy, he went back to Brazil in 1972. He played for Santos until 1974 and helped them win the Campeonato Paulista in 1973. He finished his football career in Canada in 1975, playing for Windsor Star in the National Soccer League.
Jair's International Games
Jair da Costa played only one game for the Brazilian national team. This was because another very famous player, Garrincha, played in the same position as him. Jair's only game for Brazil was a friendly match against Wales on May 16, 1962, which Brazil won 3–1.
He was also part of the Brazilian team that won the 1962 FIFA World Cup. Even though he was on the team, he did not play in any of the World Cup matches.
