Jam Saqi (Sindhi: ڄام ساقي) (born October 31, 1944 – died March 5, 2018) was a well-known politician from Sindh, Pakistan. People often called him Comrade Jam Saqi. He was a leader of the Communist Party of Pakistan. Jam Saqi spent over 15 years in jail because of his political work. After leaving the Communist Party in 1991, he joined the Pakistan Peoples Party. He was married to Akhtar Sultana.

Early Life and Education

Jam Saqi was born in a village called Janjhi, in the Tharparkar district. His father, Muhammad Sachal, was a teacher and a respected social worker. Jam Saqi finished his high school exams in 1962.

He then went on to study at Government College, Sachal Sarmast Arts College Hyderabad, and Sindh University. He earned his Masters degree from Sindh University. Jam Saqi once shared that a retired teacher, Inayatullah Dhamchar, helped him connect with the Communist Party of Pakistan.

Student and Political Activism

Jam Saqi was a very active student leader. He was arrested in 1967 after a big event on March 4. Later, on November 3, 1968, he helped start the Sindh National Students Federation (SNSF). This was a student group linked to the Communist Party. He was the first president of this group.

Jam Saqi worked with many important leaders and workers in Sindh. These included Comrade Haider Bux Jatoi and G.M Syed. In 1969, he joined the Sindh Hari Committee, which was a group for farmers in Sindh.

Joining Political Parties

Jam Saqi also joined the National Awami Party. He was chosen as a joint secretary for this party. He believed in ideas like socialism, which focuses on fairness and equality for everyone.

In 1971, when there was a military operation in East Pakistan, Jam Saqi's group organized protests against the military in Hyderabad and Nawabshah. During this time, he worked secretly to organize farmers and young people in Sindh.

The Jam Saqi Case

In 1983, Jam Saqi and several others faced a special military court. They were accused of working against the ideas of Pakistan. This case became known as the Communist case or the Jam Saqi Case.

Many famous people spoke in his defense during the trial. These included Benazir Bhutto, a leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party, and Baloch leader Mir Ghous Bux Bizenjo. Their support showed how important Jam Saqi was.

Jam Saqi also supported the MRD movement in 1983. This was a movement started by different political parties to bring back democracy.

Author and Legacy

Jam Saqi was also a writer. He wrote a short novel called "Khahori Khijan." He also wrote a book about the student movement in Sindh, titled "Sindh Ji Shagrid Tahreek." His statements from the military court trials were published as books in both Urdu and Sindhi. These books were called "Tareekh Moonkhay na wesarreindi" and "Zameer ke Qaidi."

In 2009, Jam Saqi received a special award for his lifelong efforts. This award recognized his work to improve conditions for working people and to protect human rights.

Death

Jam Saqi passed away on March 5, 2018, at the age of 73. He died in Hyderabad, Sindh, due to kidney failure. He was buried later that evening at the Baban Shah graveyard in Hyderabad.
