Jamaica is a small place in Illinois, USA. It is an unincorporated community in Jamaica Township, Vermilion County. This means it's a settled area that doesn't have its own local government. Instead, it's governed by the county or township.

History of Jamaica

Jamaica grew because of the railroads in the late 1800s. The C&EI railroad helped the town become busy and successful.

How Jamaica Changed

After a while, the quarries (places where stone is dug out) in nearby Fairmount closed down. This made the town of Jamaica start to shrink. Today, it is still a small unincorporated area.

Jamaica High School

Later, several high schools in the area joined together. The new school was built near Jamaica. It replaced the older high schools from Fairmount, Indianola, and Sidell. This new school was named Jamaica High School.
