Fairmount's Early Days and Growth
Fairmount has an interesting past, especially how it got its start.
How Fairmount Was Founded
A railroad engineer named Josiah Hunt heard that the Great Western Railroad was coming through the area. He bought about 40 acres of land along the new train route. His plan was to create a new town there.
Naming the Village
Josiah Hunt first called the town Salina. But there was already another town in Illinois named Saline. So, the name had to be changed. An early settler, Francis Dougherty, is believed to have chosen the name Fairmount. The village officially became a town in 1863.
Industries and Quarries
People tried to mine for coal east of Fairmount. However, it was too difficult because of water. Later, a man named Jacob C. Sandusky found limestone on his farm. This led to the creation of quarries, which are places where stone is dug out of the ground. At one point, about 400 people worked in these quarries. Today, the quarries are filled with water and are popular spots for fishing.
