James Alonzo Stahle (born January 11, 1829 – died December 21, 1912) was an important figure from Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Republican Party. He also served in the U.S. House of Representatives. This is where laws are made for the entire country.

Life of James Alonzo Stahle

James Alonzo Stahle was born in West Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He went to local schools and also attended York Academy. As a young man, he learned how to be a printer. Later, he became a merchant tailor, making and selling clothes.

Serving in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began, James Stahle wanted to help. In 1861, he created a special group of soldiers called the Ellsworth Zouaves. These soldiers were known for their unique uniforms and marching style.

In August 1861, he and 40 new soldiers joined the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. This was Company A of the regiment. Stahle showed great leadership during the war. He rose through the ranks to become a lieutenant colonel. He served bravely until he was discharged from the army in 1864.

After the War and Politics

After the war, Stahle continued to serve his community. From 1869 to 1885, he worked as a deputy collector. This meant he helped collect taxes for the government in York, Pennsylvania. He also spent time working on farms, which is called agricultural pursuits.

In 1894, James Stahle was elected to the Fifty-fourth Congress. He represented Pennsylvania as a Republican. He served one term in Congress. In 1896, he decided not to run for re-election.

After his time in Congress, he went back to farming. James Alonzo Stahle passed away in 1912. He died on his farm near Emigsville, which is close to York. He was buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery in York.
