History of West Manchester Township
West Manchester Township was created in 1799. It was formed from the western part of Manchester Township. Early jobs in the area included farming, weaving, and milling.
Civil War Events in West Manchester
During the American Civil War in 1863, the township was an important path for Confederate soldiers. On June 28, 1863, Major General Jubal A. Early's group marched through the township. They were on their way to take over York.
A few days later, on July 1, J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry rode through the township. They were heading to Dover after a battle in Hanover. Farmers and residents in West Manchester Township lost horses and mules to the Confederate forces.
Historic Places in the Township
The Samuel Stoner Homestead is a special historic site in the township. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means it is recognized as an important historical place.

West Manchester Township covers about 20.1 square miles. Most of this area is land, with a very small amount of water. The township is next to the city of York on its east side. It also almost completely surrounds the small town of West York.
