James Barenger (1780–1831) was a talented English artist. He was known for painting animals, especially horses and dogs. He also created illustrations for books and magazines.

James Barenger was born in Kentish Town, London, in 1780. His father, James Barenger Senior, was also an artist. His father created metal art and painted insects. He even showed his paintings at important art exhibitions.

James's mother was Sarah Woollett. Her father, William Woollett, was a famous engraver. James also had a brother, Samuel Barenger, who became an engraver too. Art was clearly a big part of their family!

James Barenger started his career painting landscapes. But he soon found his true passion: animals. He became known for his detailed paintings of horses, dogs, and other animals. He also painted exciting hunting scenes.

In 1807, when he was 28, James showed his art at the Royal Academy for the first time. This was a very important art show in London. At that time, he lived with his father in Kentish Town. Later, he moved to Camden Town.

Barenger was quite successful. He showed 48 paintings at the Royal Academy. He also displayed eight paintings at the British Institution.

Famous Works and Patrons

Many rich and important people liked James Barenger's art. They became his "patrons," meaning they supported him by buying his paintings.

His pictures were also used in popular sports magazines. These included British Field Sports and The Sporting Magazine. For The Sporting Magazine, an engraver named John Scott made a print of Barenger's painting of a famous racehorse called Blucher.

Besides painting, James Barenger also loved dogs. He even bred pointer dogs, which are known for their hunting skills.

James Barenger passed away on October 1, 1831. He was buried in the churchyard of St Pancras Old Church in London.
