His Amazing Bravery in World War I
During a battle in France, Second Lieutenant Johnson was leading his soldiers. They faced many attacks from the enemy. For six hours, under heavy enemy fire, he bravely held his ground. He stopped the enemy from moving forward.
When he was finally told to retreat, he was the last person to leave the front line. He even carried a wounded soldier to safety. But he didn't stop there! Three more times, he went back into the dangerous area. Each time, he rescued badly wounded men while intense machine-gun fire was all around him. His actions saved many lives.
Life After the War
After the First World War ended, James Johnson continued to serve his country. He joined the Royal Irish Constabulary, working as a police officer.
He passed away in Plymouth, England, in 1943 when he was 53 years old. He was cremated at Efford Crematorium in Plymouth.
