James Butler of Polestown facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir James Butler of Polestown (died 1487) was an important leader in Ireland during the time of the Yorkist kings. He came from a powerful family and played a big role in Irish history.

Sir James Butler's Life and Work

James was the oldest son of Sir Edmund MacRichard Butler. In 1464, he took over his father's role. He became the Lord Deputy of Ireland because his cousins, who were the Earls of Ormond, were not living in Ireland at the time.

Like his family before him, James was a strong leader. He was known for leading groups and taking part in raids across southern Leinster.

At one point, he supported the House of Lancaster against King Edward IV of England. Because of this, he faced serious legal trouble. However, once King Edward IV was firmly in charge, he forgave James. The Irish Parliament even passed a law to clear James's name.

In April 1468, King Edward IV rewarded James for his loyalty. He gave him the land and the right to choose the local priest for Callan. Later, in 1477, James was put in charge of managing the lands of the Earl of Ormond in Ireland. He helped improve the town of Carrick-on-Suir. James was also made a knight and built a castle called Neigham near Gowran.

His Final Years

Sir James Butler passed away on 16 April 1487. He was buried in the Callan Augustinian Friary, which he had helped to establish.

Family Life

Around 1450, James and Sabh Kavanagh had children together. Sabh's parents were Donal Reagh MacMurrough-Kavanagh, who was the King of Leinster, and a daughter of an O'Nolan chieftain.

James and Sabh were married after their first three children were born. James later arranged for the Irish Parliament to officially recognize all their children as legitimate.

Their children included:

  • Edmund Butler of Polestown
  • Theobald Butler of Polestown
  • John FitzJames Butler of Polestown
  • Alice Butler (also known as Ellice)
  • Margaret
  • Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormond and 1st Earl of Ossory (1467-1539), who was also known as Red Piers.
