James Christie was born in 1730 in Perth, Scotland. He grew up to become a very important person in the world of art and antiques. He was known for his strong voice and his passion for his work.
Starting Christie's Auction House
On December 5, 1766, James Christie opened his own auction house. It was located in Pall Mall, a famous street in London, England. His company, Christie's, quickly became a top place for selling valuable items.
At first, his auction rooms were in a building that used to be a print shop. For a while, the Royal Academy of Arts even held their art shows there. Later, Christie moved his business right next door to the famous painter Thomas Gainsborough.
Christie's Friends and Legacy
James Christie was friends with many important people of his time. These included famous actors like David Garrick and artists like Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. He was a respected figure in London society.
He passed away at his home in Pall Mall on November 8, 1803. He was 73 years old. He was buried in a churchyard near Hampstead Road in London.

James Christie was married twice. He had four sons from his first marriage.
