James Thomas Condon (born September 27, 1923 – died February 14, 2014) was a famous Australian actor. He worked in radio, on stage, and wrote scripts. He was best known for his many roles on Australian TV shows like Number 96 and Neighbours. James was married to actress Anne Haddy, who also starred in Neighbours. His sister, Coralie Condon, was a well-known theatre producer and actress. She was even called the "First Lady of Western Australian Television."

Early Life and Career Start

James Thomas Condon was born in Fremantle, Western Australia. He began his acting career in a type of theatre called repertory theatre. This is where actors perform different plays regularly.

In 1942, James joined ABC Radio in Perth. During World War II, he served in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). He became a flight lieutenant, which is a senior officer rank.

Acting After the War

After the war, James worked for the BBC in the United Kingdom. In 1951, he returned to Australia. He continued his acting career in radio shows, including one called Portia Faces Life.

When television started in Australia in 1956, James moved to Sydney. He appeared on the very first night of ABN2, a TV channel in Sydney. He also acted in several early ABC plays, such as Tomorrow's Child.

Television Roles and Hosting

In 1961, James Condon played the main character in The Story of Peter Grey. This was one of the first soap opera dramas made for Australian television.

That same year, James hosted his own variety show called What's Next. On this show, he welcomed his old friend Ray Hartley. Ray was a world-class Australian pianist and composer.

James appeared in many other popular Australian TV shows. These included crime dramas like Homicide and Matlock Police. He was also in Number 96, playing different characters in the TV show and its movie. Other shows he appeared in were The Young Doctors, Sons and Daughters, and Prisoner. Later in his career, he acted in The Flying Doctors and Blue Heelers.

Personal Life and Family

James Condon had a sister named Coralie and a brother named Terry. His first marriage was to Joan Cranmer. They had four daughters together.

In 1977, James married Australian actress Anne Haddy. Anne was famous for playing Helen Daniels in the TV show Neighbours. James was a stepfather to Anne's two children, Jane and Tony.

He even acted alongside Anne Haddy in Neighbours twice. He played Douglas Blake in 1985 and Reuben White in 1995.

James Condon suffered a stroke in 2013. He passed away from another stroke on February 14, 2014. He was 90 years old and living in a retirement home in Narrabeen, Sydney.
