He later earned his Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh. His Ph.D. research looked at how Christianity spread in an ancient Scottish kingdom called Fortriu. For a time, James Fraser was a senior teacher at the University of Edinburgh. He taught history there until 2015. After that, he moved back to Canada. He is now the Chair of the Scottish Studies Foundation at the University of Guelph. This means he leads a program that studies Scottish history and culture.
