James Grey Willie (born November 1, 1814 – died September 9, 1895) was an important leader of the Latter-day Saint handcart pioneers. These pioneers traveled across America using handcarts instead of wagons.

Biography of James G. Willie

James G. Willie was born in Murrell Green, England. This area is in Hampshire, a county in England. In 1836, he moved to the United States. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1842.

Early Travels and Missions

Willie first arrived in Utah Territory in 1847. He traveled with a group led by Jedediah M. Grant. In 1852, he went back to England. He served there as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

At the end of his mission, he became a leader. He helped many Latter-day Saints move to Utah Territory. He was in charge of the Latter-day Saints traveling on a ship called the Thornton. This ship sailed from Liverpool, England, to Boston, USA. Many people on this ship later joined his handcart company.

Leading the Handcart Company

James G. Willie led the fourth handcart company. This group was one of two that got stuck in Wyoming in late 1856. They faced very harsh weather conditions. Sadly, many people in his company died during this difficult journey.

Life in Utah

Later, James G. Willie was among the first settlers of Mendon, Utah Territory. He held several important jobs in the town. He served as the mayor of Mendon for some time. He also worked as the town's postmaster.

In 1863, Willie started the first Sunday School in Mendon. He also served as a counselor in the local bishopric. This is a leadership position in the church. He also managed a co-operative store. This type of store is owned by its members.

James G. Willie has been featured in many books. One example is In the Company of Angels by David Farland.

James G. Willie passed away on September 9, 1895. The whole town of Mendon, Utah, attended his funeral. It was held on September 13, 1895.
