James H. Stewart (1859–1924) was an important person in Texas history. He was a dedicated teacher and a Republican politician. He worked to represent the people of Texas in the state government.
Who Was James H. Stewart?
James H. Stewart was born on September 5, 1859, in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. Some records suggest he might have been born in 1857. When he was about 10 years old, in 1869, his family moved to Falls County, Texas. Later, around 1879, he moved to Hearne, Texas.
His Education and Career
Stewart received his education at Prairie View Normal School. This school later became a well-known university called Prairie View A&M University. After his studies, he became a teacher. Teaching was a very important job, helping to educate young people in his community.
Serving in the Texas Legislature
James H. Stewart also chose to enter politics. He was a member of the Republican Party. In 1884, he was elected to the 19th Texas Legislature. This is like being elected to a state-level parliament. He represented the 48th District, which included Robertson County. He served one term, from January 1885 to January 1887. During his time in office, he helped make laws for the state of Texas.
