James Aloysius "Ace" Lyons Jr. (born September 28, 1927 – died December 12, 2018) was an important admiral in the United States Navy. He was known for his leadership. From 1985 to 1987, he served as the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet. This was a very high-ranking position.

James Lyons joined the Navy Reserve right after World War II. He then went to the United States Naval Academy. He graduated from this famous school in 1952. Later, he continued his education. He earned advanced degrees from the Naval War College and the National Defense University.
Serving as a Surface Warfare Officer
Admiral Lyons served in the Navy for more than 35 years. He was a Surface Warfare Officer. This means he specialized in commanding ships on the ocean. He commanded two ships: the USS Charles S. Sperry (DD 697) and the USS Richmond K. Turner (DLG 20).
Key Leadership Roles
Throughout his career, Lyons held many important jobs. He was appointed as the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. This role meant he was in charge of all naval forces in the Pacific Ocean. He also served as the Senior U.S. Military Representative to the United Nations. This was a role where he represented the U.S. military to other countries. In March 2018, James Lyons wrote an opinion piece for a newspaper. This article later caused some discussion. The newspaper eventually removed the article and apologized. This happened because some claims in the article were found to be false.
