James Magnussen, born on April 11, 1991, is a famous retired Australian swimmer. He is an Olympic medalist and was a world champion in the 100-metre freestyle event in both 2011 and 2013. He is known for one of the fastest 100-metre freestyle swims ever, with a time of 47.10 seconds.

Throughout his career, James won 16 medals in big international swimming competitions. These include eight gold, five silver, and three bronze medals. He competed in the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and Pan Pacific Championships. He officially stopped competing on June 5, 2019.

Swimming Career Highlights

Starting Out in 2010

At the 2010 Australian Swimming Championships, James Magnussen finished third in the 100-metre freestyle. This result helped him join the national swimming team.

He then won a silver medal at the 2010 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in the 4×100-metre freestyle relay. He swam the last part of the race, helping his team finish strong.

Later that year, James competed at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. There, he won a gold medal in the 4×100-metre freestyle relay with his teammates.

World Champion in 2011

In 2011, James qualified for the national team again by winning the 100-metre freestyle at the Australian Championships.

At the 2011 World Aquatics Championships, James had an amazing performance, winning two gold medals and one silver. He helped his team win gold in the 4×100-metre freestyle relay. He started the race for his team with a very fast time.

A few days later, James became the first Australian man to win the 100-metre freestyle at a World Championships. He finished the race in 47.63 seconds. He also won a silver medal in the 4x100-metre medley relay, swimming the freestyle part of the race. His speed almost helped his team catch up to the gold medal winners.

Olympic Trials in 2012

At the 2012 Australian Swimming Championships, which were also the trials for the Olympics, James showed he was ready. He became the national champion in both the 50-metre and 100-metre freestyle races.

In the 100-metre freestyle, he swam an incredibly fast time of 47.10 seconds. This was one of the fastest swims ever recorded in that event. He also won the 50-metre freestyle, setting a new personal best time.

London 2012 Olympic Games

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, James Magnussen won two medals. He earned a silver medal in the 100-metre freestyle, finishing just one-hundredth of a second behind the American swimmer Nathan Adrian. He also won a bronze medal as part of the 4×100-metre medley relay team.

In the 4×100-metre freestyle relay, his team finished fourth. James did not make it to the final in the 50-metre freestyle event.

World Championships and FINA World Cup in 2013

At the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, James and his team finished fourth in the 4x100-metre freestyle relay.

However, James successfully defended his title in the 100-metre freestyle, winning gold with a time of 47.71 seconds. He also helped Australia win a silver medal in the 4x100-metre medley relay.

Soon after, James competed in the FINA World Cup. He won the 100-metre freestyle event, setting a new personal best time for short course swimming.

2014 Season

James started 2014 in great shape, swimming very fast times. At the 2014 Australian Championships, he was expected to win the 100-metre freestyle. However, he was beaten by Cameron McEvoy, who swam faster. James still qualified for the Commonwealth Games.

At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, James Magnussen won a gold medal in the 100-metre freestyle. He also won two relay medals and a bronze medal in the 50-metre freestyle. Later that year, he had some injuries, including a shoulder injury that needed surgery in 2015.

Rio 2016 Olympic Games

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, James Magnussen won a bronze medal. He was part of the Australian 4×100-metre freestyle relay team that finished third behind the United States and France.

Commonwealth Games Gold in 2018

In 2018, James was part of the Australian team that won another gold medal. This was in the men's 4 x 100 m freestyle relay at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, which were held in the Gold Coast, Australia.

Return to Swimming in 2024

In February 2024, James Magnussen announced he would return to swimming. He plans to compete in the Enhanced Games. He will receive a large payment if he breaks the men’s 50m freestyle record. However, any records set at these games will not be officially recognized because there is no drug testing.

Television Appearances

In 2020, James Magnussen took part in the reality TV show SAS Australia. In 2023, he also competed on the show Dancing with the Stars, where he danced with professional partner Natalie Lowe.
