James McDaniel Jr. (born March 25, 1958) is a talented American actor. He has starred in many plays, movies, and TV shows. You might know him best as Lt. Arthur Fancy from the popular TV series NYPD Blue. He also played Paul in the famous play Six Degrees of Separation. James McDaniel has worked on many exciting projects throughout his career.

Early Life and First Steps in Acting

James McDaniel Jr. was born in Washington, D.C., on March 25, 1958. His father, James McDaniel Sr., was a doctor. James Jr. went to the University of Pennsylvania to study to become a veterinarian.

After finishing his final exams, he made a big decision. He decided to move to New York and become an actor! This was a brave choice, as he had no acting experience before. James started taking dance and voice lessons to learn the skills he needed. His very first acting job was in a Pepsi commercial.

Exploring James McDaniel's Acting Career

James McDaniel began his acting journey on the stage. He was part of the first production of Six Degrees of Separation. In this play, he played the character Paul Poitier. His performance earned him the Clarence Derwent Award.

He also created the role of Adam in the play Someone Who'll Watch Over Me. He was the only American actor in that cast. James received an Obie Award for his work in the play Before It Hits Home.

Early TV and Movie Roles

James McDaniel made guest appearances on TV shows like the sitcom Kate & Allie. He also appeared in the crime drama Gabriel's Fire. He played police officer Franklin Rose in the TV series Cop Rock.

He had a small role in the 1990 film Alice by Woody Allen. In 1991, he played a banker named Roland Halloran in Strictly Business. He also worked with director Spike Lee, playing Brother Earl in the 1992 film Malcolm X.

Becoming a TV Star: NYPD Blue

James McDaniel guest-starred as a police officer on Hill Street Blues. This show was created by Steven Bochco. After that, James often appeared in shows that Steven Bochco was involved with. These included L.A. Law and Civil Wars.

His most famous role was playing Lt. Arthur Fancy on the TV show NYPD Blue. He was on the show for eight seasons, from 1993 to 2001. For his work on NYPD Blue, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 1996. He also received three NAACP Image Award nominations for his role.

Recent Projects and Other Appearances

James McDaniel played Sgt. Jesse Longford in the crime drama Detroit 1-8-7. He appeared as an investigator in The Following. He also played Ezra Mills, who was Abbie's father, in Sleepy Hollow.

He made a guest appearance as a jazz trumpeter in NCIS: New Orleans. James also appeared in the movies See You in September (2010) and Night Comes On (2018).

James McDaniel has also starred in many television movies. These include Silencing Mary (1996) and Unforgivable (1996). In the 2000 TV movie Out of Time, he played the main character. He also played the famous singer Nat King Cole in Livin' for Love: The Natalie Cole Story (2000). The singer Natalie Cole herself chose James to play her father.
