James McDaniel Jr. is an American actor who has starred in many plays, movies, and TV shows. He was born on March 25, 1958. He is most famous for playing Lieutenant Arthur Fancy in the TV series NYPD Blue. He also played Paul in the popular play Six Degrees of Separation. You might also know him as Brother Earl from the 1992 movie Malcolm X and Sergeant Jesse Longford in the TV show Detroit 1-8-7.

James McDaniel's Early Life

James McDaniel Jr. was born in Washington, D.C., on March 25, 1958. His father, James McDaniel Sr., was a doctor. James Jr. went to the University of Pennsylvania and studied to become a veterinarian.

After finishing his final exams, he decided to try something completely different! He moved to New York to become an actor, even though he had never acted before. James took dance and voice lessons. His very first acting job was in a Pepsi commercial.

James McDaniel's Acting Journey

James McDaniel started his acting career on stage in plays. He was in the first ever show of Six Degrees of Separation, playing the character Paul Poitier. He even won an award called the Clarence Derwent Award for his great performance. He was also the only American actor in the play Someone Who'll Watch Over Me, where he played Adam. He received an Obie Award for his acting in Before It Hits Home.

His First TV and Movie Roles

James began appearing on television in guest roles. He was in the sitcom Kate & Allie and the crime show Gabriel's Fire. He played a police officer named Franklin Rose in the TV series Cop Rock.

He also had small parts in movies. He was a party guest in the Woody Allen film Alice (1990). He played a banker named Roland Halloran in Strictly Business (1991). In Spike Lee's movie Malcolm X (1992), he played Brother Earl.

Becoming Lieutenant Fancy

James McDaniel guest starred as a police officer on Hill Street Blues, a show created by Steven Bochco. After that, he often worked on shows that Steven Bochco was involved with, like L.A. Law and Civil Wars.

His most famous role was playing Lieutenant Arthur Fancy on the TV show NYPD Blue. He was on the show for eight seasons, from 1993 to 2001. For his work on NYPD Blue, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 1996. He also received three NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

After NYPD Blue, James McDaniel continued to act in many TV shows and movies. He played Sergeant Jesse Longford in the crime drama Detroit 1-8-7. He appeared as an investigator in The Following and played Ezra Mills, Abbie's father, in Sleepy Hollow. He also made a guest appearance as a jazz trumpeter in NCIS: New Orleans.

In movies, James appeared in See You in September (2010) and Night Comes On (2018). He has also been in many TV movies. He played the famous singer Nat King Cole in Livin' for Love: The Natalie Cole Story (2000). The singer Natalie Cole, Nat King Cole's daughter, personally chose James to play her father.
