James W. Mickens is an American computer scientist. He is a professor of Computer Science at Harvard University. His work focuses on distributed systems. These are like huge computer networks. He studies how to make them work well and be very secure. He also thinks that machine learning isn't always the best solution for every computer problem.

James Mickens grew up in Atlanta, USA. His father, Ronald E. Mickens, is also a scientist. He is a physicist and a mathematician.
James studied computer science in college. He earned his first degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2001. Later, he got a Ph.D. in computer science in 2008. He earned this advanced degree from the University of Michigan.
What He Does
From 2009 to 2015, James Mickens worked at Microsoft Research. He was part of a team that studied distributed systems. These systems connect many computers to work together.
In 2015, he became a professor at Harvard University. He teaches about computer science there. In 2019, he earned tenure. This means he has a permanent teaching position.
In 2016, he helped create a new system called Polaris. This system was designed at MIT. It helps webpages load much faster.
In 2020, James Mickens joined the board of directors. This was for the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard. In 2021, he started a project with Jonathan Zittrain. It's called the Institute for Rebooting Social Media. This project looks for new ways to make social media better.
