James F. Monaco (born November 15, 1942 – died November 25, 2019) was an American expert on movies. He was a film critic, an author, a publisher, and a teacher. He helped many people understand films better.

James Monaco's Life and Work
James Monaco was a very important person in the world of movies and media. He started a company called Baseline in 1982. This was one of the first online databases about the entertainment industry. Think of it like an early version of IMDb, which you might use today to find out about movies and actors! Baseline was later bought by other companies, showing how valuable his idea was.
He also taught about film and media at several big universities. These included The New School, Columbia University, and New York University. He was a media expert who shared his thoughts on NPR in the 1980s. He also wrote articles for famous newspapers like The New York Times and The Christian Science Monitor.

James Monaco wrote many books about movies. One of his most famous books is How To Read A Film. This book helps people understand how movies are made and what they mean.
