James Owens Wylie (1845 – 13 December 1935) was an important Irish lawyer and a senior judge. He had a long and successful career in law, helping to make decisions in courts and contributing to the legal system in Ireland.

Early Life and Education

James Owens Wylie was born in Belfast, a city in Ireland. His parents were William Andrew Wylie and Jane Beatty.

He went to school at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. After that, he studied mathematics at Queen's College, Belfast. He earned his first degree (BA) in 1867 and a master's degree (MA) in 1868.

Becoming a Lawyer

After finishing his studies, James Wylie decided to become a lawyer. In 1872, he was officially allowed to practice law in Ireland. This is known as being "called to the Bar of Ireland". It meant he could represent people in court.

A Try at Politics

In 1886, James Wylie tried to become a politician. He ran as a candidate for the Liberal Party in a place called North Tyrone during the general election. A general election is when people vote to choose their leaders. However, he did not win the election. He lost to a candidate from the Irish Unionist Alliance.

A Distinguished Legal Career

James Wylie continued his work in law and became very respected.

Queen's Counsel and King's Inn

In 1894, he was given a special title called Queen's Counsel. This title is given to experienced lawyers who are highly skilled. It means they can advise the Crown (the government) and take on more important cases.

Later, in 1904, he became a "bencher" of King's Inn. King's Inn is a very old and important place for lawyers in Ireland. Being a bencher means he was a senior member who helped manage the legal profession.

High-Ranking Judge

James Wylie's career continued to rise. In 1909, he joined the Privy Council of Ireland. This was a group of important advisors to the King or Queen in Ireland.

By 1914, he became a Lord Justice of Ireland. This was a very high position in the legal system. He served as a judge in the Supreme Court of Judicature (Ireland). This court handled major legal cases.

He also worked as a Judicial Commissioner for the Irish Land Commission. This commission dealt with important issues about land ownership in Ireland.

James Owens Wylie passed away on December 13, 1935, after a long and impactful life dedicated to the law.
