His Life and Learning

James Paine the younger was the only son of James Paine the elder. He studied art and architecture at the St. Martin's Lane Academy in London. This was a place where young artists learned their skills.

He also had a special chance to see a collection of ancient Greek and Roman art. This collection was at Richmond House and was opened to artists thanks to his father's efforts. This happened from 1770 onwards.

It seems James Paine also traveled to Italy. Many artists of his time visited Italy to study its famous ancient buildings and artworks. His father likely left him enough money to live comfortably when he passed away in 1786.

By 1788, James Paine had homes in both Hammersmith and Salisbury Street. In 1791, he became one of the first fifteen members of the Architects' Club. This was a group for important architects.

His Works and Art

James Paine showed his "stained drawings" at art exhibitions in 1761, 1764, and 1790. These were special kinds of drawings.

After returning from Italy, he sent some of his architectural drawings to the Royal Academy exhibitions in 1781 and 1783. In 1788, he showed a drawing for an Intended Bridge across Lough Foyle at Derry. This was a design for a bridge that was planned but not built.

He only had one building project actually constructed during his career. As a sculptor, he designed the memorial for William Powell in Bristol Cathedral. This is a special statue or monument built to remember someone.

His Legacy

After James Paine passed away, his art, books, and other items were sold in 1830. Among these items were old account books from famous sculptors Nicholas Stone and his son, Henry Stone. These important books are now kept at Sir John Soane's Museum.

A large book filled with 57 drawings he made in Rome in 1774 also survived. These drawings included plans of palaces, views of places like Albano and Tivoli, and detailed drawings of statues. This book eventually went to the South Kensington Museum. His works and drawings are still preserved today.
