James Power, 3rd Earl of Tyrone facts for kids
James Power, 3rd Earl of Tyrone (born in 1667 – died on August 19, 1704) was an important Irish nobleman who supported the Jacobite cause. The Jacobites were people who wanted to bring back King James II and his family to the throne of England, Scotland, and Ireland.
James Power was the youngest son of Richard Power, 1st Earl of Tyrone and Lady Dorothy Annesley. His older brother was John Power, 2nd Earl of Tyrone. John married Katharine FitzGerald, who was the only child of Sir John FitzGerald of Dromana. James also had a sister named Lady Helena Power.
His grandparents on his father's side were John Power, 5th Baron Power, and Ruth Pyphoe. On his mother's side, his grandparents were Arthur Annesley, 1st Earl of Anglesey, and Elizabeth Altham.
What did James Power do?
Even though James Power was a Protestant, he served as a Captain in his father's army. In 1690, when the city of Waterford surrendered, James Power decided to support King William III. Because of this, he received a special pardon in 1697.
From 1691 until he passed away in 1704, James Power was the Governor of the city and county of Waterford. This meant he was in charge of the area.
In 1693, his brother died, and James Power became the Earl of Tyrone. This was an important title, making him the 3rd Earl of Tyrone.
Family Life
On December 13, 1692, James Power married Anne Rickard. She was the oldest daughter of Andrew Rickard. James and Anne had one child:
- Lady Catherine Power: She married Marcus Beresford in 1717. Marcus was the only son of Sir Tristram Beresford, 3rd Baronet. In 1746, King George I made Marcus an Earl, giving him the title of Earl of Tyrone.
Lord Tyrone, James Power, died on August 19, 1704. When he died, his title of Earl of Tyrone ended because he had no sons to inherit it. Lady Tyrone, Anne Rickard, passed away later, on September 26, 1729. She was buried in a church in Carrick-on-Suir.
In 1767, a special decision was made by the Irish House of Lords. They confirmed that the title of Baron La Poer would pass to James Power's daughter, Catherine, and her children.
